if you cut me in half
and you count all my rings
you will see the scars of all those years
the floods, the fires, the lightning

if a storm comes along
and tears my roots up for good
you will see the sudden size of me
you couldn’t see while I still stood

i made a couple mistakes
i done a couple’a wrongs
mighta trampled on a couple hearts
strung a couple girls along

but the worst that i done
is what i done to myself
i have poured the poison down my throat
stolen all of my own wealth

we create our own demons
so we have someone to fight
if somebody’s not bleeding
something doesn’t feel right
give us shelter and water
and an enemy to blame
or we make our own demons
and follow them into the flames

i’ve made it hard for myself
to find a comfortable rest
i’ve abandoned many worthy things
for failing some foolish test

to find a good place to land
to release the ghosts inside my head
