where did these wrinkles come from?
from laughter or worrying
boredom or hurrying
passion or slowly going numb?
when did these grey hairs appear?
while I was waiting
for someone a little more
brave to show up in my mirror?
life was a highway once
stretching in front of us
taking us anywhere
we wanted to go
but now it's a parking lot
we're stuck with the lives we've got
stuck with the things we’ve done
and the people we know
stuck with the art of letting go
i thought i'd have done it by now
been famous or infamous
or done something marvelous
shook the foundation somehow
but all my best efforts have done
is keep me afloat awhile
drifting along in style
trying not to hurt anyone
i led a lonesome youth
and to tell you the truth
i don’t miss anything
of that lonely show
but if i could call the past
talk sense to myself at last
i’d tell myself all the things
i needed to know
about the art of letting go
but getting old is getting old
and keeping cool has left me cold
and i’m arguing with memories
i’m fighting with my fantasies
and they’re winning
oh they’re winning
yeah they’re winning
so I let them go
